Maprotiline HCl
Indications/Uses
Endogenous depression.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 25-75 mg daily in single or 3 divided doses. Moderate to severe depression Initially 75 mg daily, may be gradually increased up to 150 mg daily.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Epilepsy or lowered convulsion threshold, acute MI, cardiac conduction defects, narrow-angle glaucoma, urinary retention. Acute poisoning w/ alcohol, hypnotics or psychotropic drugs. Concomitant treatment w/ MAOIs. Severe hepatic or renal impairment.
Special Precautions
Risk of suicide. CV disease. Postural hypotension. Schizophrenia, cyclic affective disorders. History of increased IOP, chronic constipation, or urinary retention. Abrupt w/drawal or dose reduction. Electroconvulsive therapy. During long-term treatment, monitor hepatic & renal function, & blood count. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery. Pregnancy or lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Frequent: Mild CNS & anticholinergic reactions. Occasional: Sinus tachycardia, postural hypotension, nausea, wt gain, allergic skin reactions.
Drug Interactions
MAOIs, antihypertensives, sympathomimetics, anticholinergic agents, CNS drugs, anticonvulsants, anticoagulants, antidiabetics. Alcohol.
